Abstract
The influence of a preoxidation at 350 C, 500 C and 600 C in air
on the development of the compound layer as formed by gas
nitriding is examined. Preoxidation at 500 C or 600 C results in a
thicker and more uniform thickness of the compound layer, while
preoxidation at 350 C does not appear to have a significant
effect. Two hypotheses are put forward: i) the availability of
nucleation sites at the oxide ferrite interface; ii) the
prevention of N2 formation at the surface.
