The goal of this report is to pursue a new paradigm for basic
research in Solid and Structural Mechanics in order to serve the
needs of the Navy of the 21st century. The framework for the
report was established through meetings of the committee with Navy
engineers and Office of Naval Research personnel, and through
extensive deliberations among committee members representing
diverse interests and experiences. Several technological
challenges emerged that confront the Navy as it plans to carry out
its future missions, and fundamental advances in Solid and
Structural mechanics will be required to meet these challenges.
