Abstract
This report deals with airfoil design. Although the statements presented are quite general, particular attention has been given to the design of two dimensional airfoil sections for wind turbine rotor blades. Airfoil target charateristics obtained in a previous study on optimization of a 22 m wind turbine rotor has been used.
A short mention to analytical and numerical tools is given. Fundamental aspects of two dimensional viscous flow are discussed in the first part of this paper, such as boundary layer control, leading edge laminar separation, turbulent transition, drag reduction and CLmax prediction.
Parametric study of geometry features is presented, accuracy of results discussed and design of special-purpose airfoils performed. Outstanding is the design of a thin airfoil (for the outboard section) having rather low CLmax and a thick airfoil for the inboard section having rather high CLmax. Finally a low drag airfoil having a relatively low CLmax has been designed.
