    Abstract

A summary of the current activities at the Materials Department, RISO National Laboratory, within the field of application and development of advanced nondestructive testing (NDT) methods in materials research and reactor fuel elements inspection is presented. The two main NDT methods presently considered for defect detection and quantitative analyses are X-radiography and ultrasound scanning. Other NDT techniques are applied, for example for inspection of irradiated reactor fuel elements. In general, NDT performed at RISO has been applied quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The techniques and the on-going research and development for quantification of ultrasonic and X-radiographic NDT data on the structure of advanced materials and components are briefly described. It is proposed that NDT is particularly important during the design and optimisation stages in advanced materials development, and that quantitative data may be applied for process control.
