    Abstract

A formula for calculation of the isotopic composition parameter δ in a system with any number of sources and sinks is derived. It is applied to the isotope pairs 13C/12C and to 2H/H in atmospheric methane for which the importance of isotope fractionation in the sink processes is illustrated.
