N2 - The study covers a review of literature and available industry information regarding release of bisphenol A from polycarbonate and the parameters affecting this bisphenol A release. Moreover in part two of the study, different samples of polycarbonate was characterised and analysed in order to examine the potential correlation between material specific parameters and the release of bisphenol A. It is concluded, from industry information, that only highly pure reagent grade chemicals, including additives, should be used for all polycarbonate grades to reduce photodegradation and hydrothermal degradation of the polymer. No specific information was found about additives known to improve the hydrolytic stability of polycarbonate.
