Micromechanical modeling of wind blade materials

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

Abstract

An overview of methods and approaches of micromechanics of materials which can be used for the modeling of wind blade composites is given in this chapter. Using the variety of the modeling methods reviewed here, the strength, stiffness, and lifetime of the materials can be predicted, and the applicability of different groups of materials to the application in wind turbine blades can be analyzed. The effects of interface and matrix properties, fiber clustering, nanoreinforcement of the strength, and lifetime of the composites were studied in the simulations. Some examples of the analysis of the microstructural effects on the strength and fatigue life of composites are shown.
