    Abstract

In this chapter, corrosion and metal release are described and examples provided of both corrosion failure and the importance of a passive protective layer in everyday materials. The thermodynamically most favorable state of a metal can be predicted by the use of Pourbaix diagrams, and the nobility of a given metal can be evaluated at standard conditions by using the electrochemical series. We describe how electrochemical studies of a given metal in a given solution can be carried out to evaluate more exact corrosion kinetics, e.g., with the purpose of lifetime prediction for the metal itself or estimation of metal release into a given solution.
