Abstract
A systematic approach to the design space of instrument display components is described based on a semiotic extension of Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE). A taxonomy of media types, representational forms, and scale types is proposed to account for the basic dimensions of the design space. The approach is applied to tailoring of soft instrument displays in supervisory control, showing how flexibility can be obtained by transformations of media, scale types and/or representational forms. These transformations correspond intuitively to an exploration of the design space.
