    Abstract

By providing at the same time thermal insulation and transparency the silica aerogel is a very attractive material for the purpose of improving the thermal performance of windows. Nevertheless a lot of problems have to be solved on the way from concept to the developed product. The B1 Aerogels project deals with some of these problems. This report summarizes the work that has been carried out on the subject of characterizing the optical and thermal performance of different types of aerogels and aerogel-like materials for the purpose of using aerogel in clear glazings. All measurements presented here are performed on small samples mainly produced as prototypes under laboratory conditions. The measurements were carried out from 1992 to 1996, almost the whole duration of Task 18, in order to have the possibility of including the newest available aerogels.
