The subject of this thesis is ceramic mixed ionic and electronic conductors (MIECs). MIECs
have potential uses, such as solid oxygen permeation membranes, as catalysts, and as components
in fuel cells. The MIECs examined in this thesis are all oxide ion conducting materials.
This thesis describes the defect chemistry and transport properties of a number of MIECs, and
the measurement methods used to determine these properties.
