Abstract
In order to cope with the dynamic and competitive environment, new elements are introduced in the business network, e.g. a joint venture, a change of supplier, or the outsourcing of a business process. This new element causes a perturbation in the dynamic meta-stable network. These perturbations, if well managed, are believed to lead to competitive advantages for the business network throughout the competitors’ network. The present paper is the first work within the development of a doctoral dissertation, which attempts to propose an approach to these perturbations as dynamic business phenomena which should be characterized and understood, and as a significant risk that is to be identified, assessed and holistically managed, not only within the new element, but in the entire network. This paper intends to begin the discussions within the philosophical approach by using system theory to address the holistic view of the system, and the perturbation as a phenomenon within the system dynamic. Thereby the borders, characteristics and dynamic of the phenomenon (research object) will be examined. This perspective was chosen for the beginning of the discussions about the perturbation phenomenon because it will provide a better understanding of the research object itself and its dynamics.
