Abstract
Low-power Internet of Things (IoT) solutions have become the main enabler for automated metering and monitoring. One of the use cases can be monitoring occupation of boat spots in a harbour. For this purpose Long Range Wide area network (LoRaWan) seems a promising technology, as it offers wide coverage and low power consumption. This paper describes and documents the simulation and field test phases in order to develop an IoT system for harbours. It contains a description of the IoT solution LoRaWan and the results for a capacity simulation and a field test in a Danish harbour. In order to scale the system when many devices are connected to a gateway for LoRaWan a simulation of harbour conditions has been made in Matlab. The field test is made for LoRaWan, to see if the technology is suitable to use in a Danish harbour environment, which can be challenging due to masts, proximity to water and reflections. The system design is evaluated in terms of mathematically analysis, field tests and simulations, which are implemented by using Arduino, python and MQTT. The results show that, LoRaWan is a useful solution for the Danish harbour environment.
