Abstract
The activity within the field of long-span cable supported bridges
has never been larger than at the end of the 20th century. The
technology is well advanced to cope with the present challenges
but it is also approaching its limits so if the trend towards ever
increasing spans continues into the next century, further
developments are required to ensure that the bridges will be
stable, durable and constructible.
