Abstract
Common methods employed for investigation of the aqueous corrosion
properties of metals are presented. The description is begun with
an introduction of the most important forms of corrosion of
metals. The basic differentiation between general corrosion,
passivity and localised corrosion is emphasised. These conditions
of the metal are explained by means of electrochemical equilibrium
theory as well as simplified models of electrochemical kinetics
and adsorption of anions at the metal surface. Various test
methods classified as electrochemical, physical, chemical and
visual tests are presented. It is concluded that the expected form
of corrosion is important for the choice of test method.
