N2 - Laboratory tests of concrete beams has shown that the acoustic emission increases when 80% of the failure load is exceeded.
A motorway bridge has been proof-tested and a part of it supervised by acoustic emission. Neither the acoustic emission nor the other measures of damage showed that damage had occured, but the measurements indicated some of the noise problems which may be active in actual tests. A flexible possibility of spatial and electrical filtering, a great number of channels and a carefull observation of possible mechanical noise sources are necessary to supervise a large structure in situ.
