Abstract

The present publication on earthquakes and earthquake design forms the basis of lectures for construction engineer students at the Technical University of Denmark. It is intended to give to the students an introduction to this vast subject. It mainly contains a survey of the fundamental principles of nature and effects of earthquakes, it also deals with earthquake measures and design codes closing with some design-recommendations.

The nature of earthquake is dealt with in section 2 where concepts of faults, Richter-magnitude and Mercalli-scale are treated. In section 3 are mentioned the movements of the earth and the sub-stricture, while the movements of the superstructure are dealt with in details, with treatment of elastic and nonelastic single-mass systems, and equations for determination of the spectral velocity and modified Mercalli-intensity (MMI) is shown (3.3.4). In section 4 on standards f.inst. S.E.A.O.C.-recommendations for calculation of the earthquake actions are mentioned. In the last section some experiences from earthquakes in recent years and various design-commendation are given.
