Introduction to the Technology, Applications, and Modal Choice of Land Transport

Land transport may be categorized as road transport or railway transport. Fundamental strengths and weaknesses are explained for each mode, including a review of management science methods and the relevant academic literature. A summary of the service planning process for each mode is offered. Factors that influence modal choice are discussed, for both passenger and freight transport. The chapter closes with a summary and forecast of coming new technologies such as driverless vehicles and magnetic levitation.
