Introduction to the Technology, Applications, and Modal Choice of Land Transport

Abstract

Land transport may be categorized as road transport or railway transport. This chapter explains the technology and components of road and rail transport, and the transport services available in each mode, in terms of capacity and flexibility. Fundamental strengths and weaknesses are explained for each mode, including a review of management science methods and the relevant academic literature. A summary of the service planning process for each mode is offered. Factors that influence modal choice are discussed, for both passenger and freight transport. The chapter closes with a summary and forecast of coming new technologies such as driverless vehicles and magnetic levitation.
