Introduction of a Fuel Cell Into a Combined Cycle: A Competitive Choice for Future Cogeneration

Abstract

Introduction of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) into a combined cycle has the potential to improve the total electrical efficiency by more than 10%. Previous studies concerning the connection of Fuel Cell into a gas turbine cycle do not give complete information about the process and its behaviour. The common definition of Fuel Cell efficiency is not sufficient to achieve COMPLETE THERMODYNAMICAL CALCULATION CONTROL of fuel cell, but this is possible by introducing the new efficiency concepts defined in the article. The “model” presented in this study makes it possible to show how the process’s total efficiency varies with time of operation. The study shows that the stack voltage and stack voltage decay rate are influential factors on the Fuel cell life cycle working in this concept. The Fuel cell efficiency decreases until it has reached a point where heat produced by the Fuel Cell is sufficient to keep its temperature high enough. This CRITICAL POINT is important and should be the basis for all life cycle calculations of the concept. The study shows, as well, that a high Fuel cell pressure has no effect on the process’s total electrical efficiency.
