    Abstract

In this paper, a new type of combined voltage and current sensor will be presented. The disruptive sensor has the possibility of built-in protection functionality. It will be evident from the paper that the need for an alternative measuring method for retrofitting in the distribution grid is of the highest importance. It will be described how a cost efficient and innovative sensor can pave the way for the distribution grid to become just as smart as the transmission part of the grid already is. The measuring principles along with various application possibilities will be described. The paper will also present a description of an implementation of distance protection functionality in the sensor. The paper will conclude with initial results from the embedded implementation of distance relay functionality on the sensor.
