Abstract

The literature highlights the influence of occupant behaviour on the energy performance of buildings, as well as the impact of gender on the perception of indoor environmental quality. This article assesses the influence of occupants' gender on the primary reasons for adjusting windows, blinds, air-conditioners and lighting fixtures in offices. An anonymous survey was sent to employees of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, returning 278 valid responses. It was concluded that the gender of occupants influences the adjustments of windows, blinds and air-conditioning, but has a small impact on the adjustments of lighting. The main perceived differences are related to the adjustments motivated by the thermal environment. This work contributed to a better understanding of occupant behaviour in office buildings.
