    Abstract

Manufacturing companies are increasingly seeking to gain the benefits from mass customization strategies as a response to increased customers’
demand for customized products. To automate the process of generating products’ specifications and guide the sales process, configurators are commonly used to support companies applying mass customization strategies. This articles analysis the relationship between the initial motivations manufacturing companies have for implementing configurators and the realized benefits from the application of configurators. The results presented in this paper are based on a survey followed with interviews in 22
industrial companies. The findings show that the main motivations can be grouped into seven categories, where the successfulness of achieving the targeted benefits varies between the individual categories. Furthermore, the results highlights that substantial benefits can be achieved when applying configurators in manufacturing companies.
