Abstract
Some 40 years of planetary boundary-layer research is briefly reviewed with Riso National Laboratory as the vantage point. The evolution of descriptions of atmospheric boundary layers including boundary-layer turbulence, its parameterization, interactions with larger scale phenomena, and engineering implications - are discussed; So are the effects of technological innovations that were utilized quickly in some areas and disappointingly slowly in others. A view of the future is attempted with caution.
