Abstract

We demonstrate the detection of THz-to-IR frequencies using lightwave-driven cold field electron emission form a metasurface. Combined with classical photo-multiplier tube technology, a novel detector-class with high sensitivity and nanosecond response time is realised. A live imaging device is made by utilising a phosphor screen in combination with a multi-channel plate. This detector and its modifications promise to have great potential in both scientific and industrial applications.
