Abstract
We have investigated the polymorphism of rutile (TiO2) under hydrostatic pressures up to 60 GPa and at room temperature. At 15 GPa TiO2 transforms to a post-rutile phase of low symmetry, possibly with a monoclinic crystal structure. Upon release of pressure, the sample transforms once more to orthorhombic TiO2-II. The bulk modulus of rutile and its pressure derivative have been determined as 215 GPa and 10, respectively.
