Abstract
Photonic crystals are described. A numerical method for
calculating the band-structures for such crystals is explained and
the appearance of forbidden frequency gaps is shown. This is used
to explain the principle of a completely new kind of optical
fibers with novel qualities. It is found that these fibers may
guide light along a low index air-column, in accordance with the
fact that they do not guide by total internal reflection.
