    Abstract

The apparatus for growing large single crystals by the Bridgman method is described, and the growth of beta-brass crystals is discussed in particular. Evaporation of Zn is avoided by encapsuling the graphite crucible in a stainless steel container, and with an appropriate growth rate of 7 mm/hr through a temperature gradient of 14°C/cm large perfect crystals (100 grams) were obtained from the melt.
