Abstract
The different types of lattice defects that break the regularity of the atomic
arrangement in crystalline solids are described, and the decisive influence of
the lattice defects on material properties are discussed. It is stated that
the demand for improved properties makes it increasingly necessary to include
the concept of lattice defects in materials technology (and not only in materials science).
