    Abstract

In a previous publication a number of experimental data were presented, showing the gas-separation ability of a series of Ranque-Hilsch vortex tubes. It was concluded that the driving force behind the observed effects is the centrifugal field. In the present paper this result is used for the calculation of the separation potential of the tubes from estimated tan2 gential-velocity distributions ). A simple model of the secondary flows in the tubes is shown to provide a basis for a quite accurate reproduction of most of the gas-separation results obtained previously.
