Abstract

A method is disclosed for determining flow acceleration directly from beamformed ultrasound data, that is, independent of velocity estimates. The method includes extracting data from two different time points and a same position or two different positions and a same time from the beamformed ultrasound data, and generating cross-correlation data to directly estimate the flow acceleration. The flow acceleration may be processed to derive information for analysis of ventricular behavior, hemodynamics, or estimation of pressure gradients in the circulatory system. An apparatus includes a beamformer (112) configured to process and generate electrical signals indicative of received echoes generated in response to interaction of a transmitted ultrasonic signal with tissue, and includes an acceleration flow processor (114) configured to directly process the RF data and to generate a flow acceleration therefrom.
