Fast track BIM integration for structural fire design of steel elements

    Abstract

By allowing a greater inter-connection between design phases, BIM software is an essential tool for decreasing costs and delivery time of building projects, as well as increasing productivity and quality. However, a major hindering in a widespread use of BIM consists in the difficulty of efficiently exporting se-lected building information to third-parties tool for other engineering applications. This work aims at develop-ing a dynamo script for an efficient information exchange between BIM and a sectional analysis tool for fire design called SteFi. The script resorts an algorithm capable of identifying most common steel profiles and exporting both the geometrical and mechanical properties of the element into a file that is then passed to SteFi, The results of the structural analysis are found in an output file and imported back into Revit. The developed script works both by direct selection of elements in the Revit model and from the IFC file.
