Abstract

This paper presents a comparison of the most common feedback control methods for collocated piezoelectric transducers, including integral force feedback (IFF), direct velocity feedback (DVF), proportional-derivative feedback (PDF), and positive position feedback (PPF). The methods are assessed experimentally with a laboratory setup comprising a set of piezoelectric transducers mounted symmetrically on a cantilever beam as collocated sensor/actuator pairs. The control laws are developed based on voltage-based expressions to be directly tuned and implemented in the experiments with low-cost real-time control boards. The active damping of the feedback control methods is quantified, and the comparison between them underlines the
superiority of the presented PPF control in attainable damping. The findings from the experiments can be used to suggest rules of thumb for digital implementation and tuning of collocated feedback controls using piezoelectric sensor/actuator pairs.
