Abstract

A previously conducted pilot test, where discarded mattresses were collected to examine their recyclability, showed that wet mattresses cannot be recycled. And far too many discarded mattresses are indeed wet. To address the issue of wet mattresses, DTU Sustain has worked on designing and user-testing a wide range of mattress plastic covers (bags). Initial user tests of nine concepts were narrowed down to four prototypes. These four designs were tested at the LOOP 2023 exhibition with just over forty visitors. The test group preferred two mattress bags with closure solutions (slider and knot). One furtherdesign was suggested by a participant. The design work continues, especially as municipal partners in the project confirm the identified need.
