Abstract

This report uses the multibody aeroelastic code HAWC2 [1] to evaluate the impact of placing vortex generators (VGs) on an operating wind turbine. The modelled turbine is a Vestas V80-2.0, and the VGs are modelled in a conservative manner to ensure safety during a planned experimental campaign. The impact of the VGs is evaluated in terms of extreme and fatigue loads during normal and extreme inflow conditions and annual energy production (AEP). The turbine response is determined to be within acceptable ranges for all considered design load cases (DLCs), and the AEP increases by 0.6% for wind class 1A. This report concludes that the mounting of the VGs is not expected to jeopardize the safe operation on the considered turbines. The funding for this report is provided by the EUDP project Advanced VGs.
