Abstract

Ultrafine magnetic particles consisting of a metastable iron-mercury alloy have been investigated in the range 15 K to 200 K by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The effective magnetic moment of iron in the iron mercury alloy is found to be enhanced above the value for alpha-Fe, about 15 % at 50 K, and to have a strong temperature dependence.
