Abstract

The stability and dynamics of Pt dimers on Pt(110)-(1 x 2) are studied using fast-scanning, variable-temperature STM. The kinetics of both dissociation and association of dimers have been quantified from a direct analysis of time-lapse STM movies. The extracted barriers are at variance with results from ab initio calculations, and we speculate that the discrepancies are due to trace amounts of gas impurities such as CO.
