    Abstract

Inverters are a crucial interface between renewable energy sources and increasingly diverse loads in modern power systems. There are many performance indicators to analyze the output characteristics like efficiency and total harmonic distortion (THD). Increasing the power converters’ efficiency at medium- and high switching frequencies, especially for high-power applications, while keeping the output quality simultaneously high is the challenge designed controller tackles. This paper proposes the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) method, which has become popular in power converters. To increase the efficiency of a single-phase 3-level inverter, focusing on switching losses (the number of pulses per cycle), two new cost functions in the MPC controller are proposed. Adding them to the main function makes it possible to reduce the variation of switching states and voltage stresses of the switches in each cycle. Utilizing the proposed method makes it easier to reduce the power losses on demand while under a variable load. At the same time, the control method minimizes the output current characteristics such as THD and DC biases. Simulation results present a good performance of the proposed MPC method in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
