    Abstract

The principles employed at Risø for dating of ceramics and heated stones from archaeological excavation sites are outlined. The accumulateo exposure is evaluated from the thermoluminescence emitted by quartz and feldspar inclusions with a size of 0.3 - 0. 5 mm. The environmental radiation and the radiation from radioisotopes embedded in the ceramics or the stones are measured by means of the TL phosphors CaSO^Dy andCaSO.iMnrespectively. The dosimetry techniques and the preparation and properties of the two phosphors are described. The effect of a number of random and systematic errors associated with TL dating is discussed.
