Abstract

The chapter briefly introduces distributed control systems, using the application to energy systems as an exemplary. The chapter introduces the main concepts of distributed control for energy systems regarding the control structure and functions. The main components of the distributed control of energy systems are explained and a description of programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition is given. Some distributed energy systems are introduced as case studies. Load frequency control is one of the problems in conventional power system control, where the control effort is distributed between local control and centralized control. With more renewable energy integration, electrical energy systems are evolving in the form of interconnected microgrids. This chapter explains and describes the concept of distributed control in microgrids.
