Abstract

The Danish hospitals are currently being centralised into regional super hospitals each servicing an entire regions replacing many local hospitals. This centralisation cause increased load of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) at few WWTPs. In this study, ARB levels in sewage was determined to specify disinfection required to eliminate hospitals as point source for ARB. New super hospitals have separate pipe for wastewater to WWTP that makes it ideal for disinfection reaction tanks.
Pilot experiments were conducted on hospital wastewaters using continuous dosing of peracetic acid (PAA) and different contact time. PAA concentration profiles and ARB elimination indicated a possibility to mitigate hospitals as point source of ARB. A typical dosage of 50 mg PAA/L and contact time of minimum 20 min reduced ARBs by 99.9%. The method appears ideal to minimizing the risk to sewage and WWTP workers posed by high loads of ARBs from centralized hospitals.
