Detection of α-particles by 3 quantum point contacts formed in a GAAS-ALGAAS heterostructure by split-gates

Abstract

Results of the simultaneous measurements of changes in the conductivity of 3 quantum point contacts (QPC) made in GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure due to impacts of alpha-particles at liquid helium temperatures are presented. Calculation of the position of penetration is based on the Thomas-Fermi approximation for screening in 2DEG. This method is put forward as a new type of a charged particle detector with high lateral resolution.
