DC Collection Network Simulation for Offshore Wind Farms

The possibility to connect offshore wind turbines with a collection network based on Direct Current (DC), instead of Alternating Current (AC), gained attention in the scientific and industrial environment. There are many promising properties of DC components that could be beneficial such as: smaller dimensions, less weight, fewer conductors, no reactive power considerations, and less overall losses due to the absence of proximity and skin effects. This work describes a study about the simulation of a Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) grid in an offshore wind farm. Suitable converter concepts are identified and the power flow in steady-state and during fault conditions is investigated. The efficiency of the network is determined in full-load conditions. Furthermore, key design aspects of such a grid are illustrated and issues regarding ripple current and converter design are treated. The overall efficiency of the MVDC grid is determined to 94%.
