Advanced technolog y i s having the effec t tha t industria l system s
a r e becoming more highl y automat e i and do no t rel y on human
interventio n fo r the contro l o ormall y planne d and/o r
predicte d situations . Thus the importanc e o f the operato r ha s
shifte d from being a manua l controlle r t o becoming mor e o f a
system s manager and supervisor y controller . At the same time ,
t he us e o f advanced informatio n technolog y i n the contro l room
and it s potentia l impac t on human-machine syste m capabilitie s
place s additiona l demands on the designer .
This repor t deals wit h work carrie d out t o describe the plant -
operato r relationshi p i n orde r t o systematiz e the desig n and
evaluatio n o f suitabl e informatio n system s i n the contro l room.
This desig n proces s start s wit h the contro l requirement s from
t he plant and transform s them int o corresponding set s o f
decision-makin g task s wit h appropriat e allocatio n o f
responsibilitie s betv/ee n compute r and operator . To furthe r
effectiviz e thi s cooperation , appropriat e informatio n displa y
and accessio n ar e identified.
