Abstract
The results of field and large-scale model tests are presented and comparisons made with the predictions of current design procedures. It is noted that the pressure pulses generated by waves breaking on the face of a structure can propagate into cracks leading to damage such as the seaward displacement of blocks from a masonry structure. Although the maximum impact pressure measured to date in the field is 745kPa, pressures up to 4MPa were measured in the laboratory. The scale effects which make it difficult to apply model results to the field are discussed and attention drawn to new numerical models which are leading to greater understanding of the phenomena involved.
