Abstract

The concept of biorefinery encompasses the conversion of biomass to high value products. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are obtained from the biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass through thermochemical and biological processes. The various methods present respective advantages and disadvantages. The current direction towards green economy makes eco-friendly approaches for XOS production the future of biorefinery. Given some superior properties over other oligosaccharides, XOS are used in the pharmaceutical, food, beverages and cosmetic industries. Currently, sustainability and green economy have led to the use of renewable biomass for XOS production. Sugarcane residues are rich in hemicellulose making them a high potential alternative biomass for XOS production. Such characteristic of these residues offers an alternative valorisation for agro-waste management. The production of XOS from these residues thus enhance the sustenance of circular bioeconomy goals for biorefinery models. This review provides available green methods for XOS production from sugarcane residues, its properties, applications and market sizes.
