    Abstract

The atmospheric flow generated in response to horizontal gradients in the surface temperature or heatflux is investigated. A linear model is described that can treat the problem for the case of small surface temperature gradients, including the approximate effect of a large-scale flow and the effect of a vertical structure in the heat and momentum diffusivity, and in the stratification. The second part of this report describes a numerical mesoscale model, and results from the application of this model to the simulation of the sea-breeze.
