Abstract
A theoretical analysis of a hydrodynamic thrust bearing is
presented. The bearing investigated is used in an ndustrial
product. The lubricant is water, but the results are valid also for other lubricants. At first the results from a 1-dimensional model for the fluid film forces and the associated deformation of the bearing geometry is presented. This model enlightens the influence of pad flexibility and support location and flexibility.
Subsequently results from a 2-dimensional model of the bearing is presented. The model is used to carry out an optimization of the bearing design, and the obtained improvements in load carrying capacity is presented.
