    Abstract

An advanced digital optical system has been used to measure surface strains on sandwich face and core specimens tested in a project concerned with improved criteria for designing sandwich X-joints. The face sheet specimens were of glass reinforced polyester and were tested in tension. The core specimens were of PVC foam and were tested in compression. The tests were performed in order to validate the use of the measurement system on these materials and to obtain material data for use in numerical simulations. While some limitations were identified, the optical system performed well and appears suitable for use in such a context.
