Abstract
Vibration damping of plate-like structures and panels can be effectively realized by active feedback control between a pair of piezoelectric patches or laminates. In the present work, active vibration damping is implemented by a Positive Position Feedback (PPF) control, for which the control gain governs the stability margin and attainable damping, while the filter time scale appears as the convenient tuning parameter. From an augmented modal representation, the so-called modal control coupling factor (MCCF) emerges as a governing coefficient in the derived closed-form expressions for optimal tuning and attainable damping. The accuracy of these design expressions is validated for vibration damping of a numerical cantilever beam.
