Abstract
The paper studies parametric wave estimation based on the ‘wave buoy analogy’, and data and results
obtained from the training ship Shioji-maru are compared with estimates of the sea states obtained from other
measurements and observations. Furthermore, the estimating characteristics of the parametric model are discussed
by considering the results of a similar estimation concept based on Bayesian modelling. The purpose of the latter
comparison is not to favour the one estimation approach to the other but rather to highlight some of the
advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches.
